Vinyl Siding Information
When compared to home exteriors such as wood, brick and stucco, you will find that vinyl siding is an alternative that is rapidly increasing in popularity around the country for
homes of all sizes and styles. All types of vinyl siding are known to be an economical way to beautify your home. Use siding to transform your home into a beautiful and
maintenance free place to live.
Using vinyl siding, you can achieve the natural appearance of wood, without the maintenance costs and hassles.
Vinyl siding is a low maintenance, durable and attractive look. It will add value to your home. You'll feel good about your choice for years to come!
Vinyl siding is known for its ability to withstand the elements. It is a great choice for many climates. It can withstand intense sunlight and heat.
When you consider the long-term cost of painting the exterior of your home, vinyl siding makes a lot of sense. Let's say you pay $1,200 to paint your home now. With inflation,
repainting every 4 years would add up to $11,350 over the next 20 years! Plus, a recent survey in Remodeling Magazine indicated that in several areas around the country, resale
Vinyl siding normally will not dent from impact. It will flex and go back to its original shape.
Coloring is the same throughout its thickness. Even if your siding is scratched, the color will not be effected.
Vinyl siding blocks moisture, preventing mold and other known allergens.
Vinyl siding is also far less combustible than plywood, wood shake, and other more flammable siding options.
Vinyl siding comes in a variety of colors and styles with matching trim and architectural details. Its texture is manufactured to resemble both wood clapboards & shingle style.
Since vinyl siding is intended to imitate wood lap siding, it is available in several profiles. Most common is a piece that imitates two courses of wood siding. These are called D4
or D5. A variation is a "Dutch Lap" style which has the shape of a traditional dutch lap wood siding. A profile with three courses of 3-inch siding is also common.
The best part about choosing vinyl siding for your home improvement project is that it is an extremely durable versatile material. It comes in a huge variety of colors. It also can
fit into many different archtectural styles from Victorian to modern.
Using Underlayment on existing houses:
Reason's for installing fanfold underlayment on siding applications. For residing applications, it is installed over the old wood siding.
By installing GreenGuard Underlayment over the old siding, a smooth level installation surface is achieved. In addition, the GreenGuardâ Underlayment can add R-Value and
resistance to air and moisture, thus complementing the siding installation with improved energy efficiency.
GreenGuard Underlayment line offers the largest variety of product choices for siding underlayment, with a choice of 3 different product types: Fanfold Underlayment,
Insulation Board, and Contoured Fanfold, for use in residing or new installations of siding material such as vinyl, steel or fiber cement siding.
GreenGuard® Fanfold Siding Underlayment is a 4’ x 50’ continuous air and moisture barrier, fanfolded into a 2’ x 4’ bundle for convenient handling.
Fiber Cement Siding:
For homeowners that want the look of wood but don’t want the hassles and costs associated with it, fiber-cement siding may be a satisfactory alternative. This product is
available from several manufacturers in a variety of textures that are said to provide the appearance of wood. Fiber-cement siding should be more durable than wood -- it is
termite-resistant, water-resistant, non-combustible, and warranted to last 50 years.
Fiber-cement siding is composed of cement, sand, and cellulose fiber that has been autoclaved (cured with pressurized steam) to increase its strength and dimensional stability.
The fiber is added as reinforcement to prevent cracking. The planks come in 5¼" to 12" widths and 5/16" and 7/16" thickness.
Several design options, and a full palette of colors, are available with fiber cement siding. One option is horizontal lap siding, which includes profiles such as: Dutch, beaded,
and traditional. You may want to incorporate architectural elements adding personality to your home. Shaped fiber cement siding is available as shingles, half rounds, octagons,
and random squares (with either a
straight or staggered edge). Vertical siding options include a traditional stucco appearance, smooth or cedar (either without vertical grooves or with regular interval grooves.)
Fiber cement soffits are also available in smooth and cedar textures, both of which can be vented. Matching low maintenance composite trim materials can complete the
architectural design.
Fiber cement siding provides a traditional wood grain appearance without the drawbacks associated with wood. It’s available in a variety of textures, profiles, and colors
matching your design requirements. Fiber cement manufacturers offer complete systems for siding, decorative shapes, soffit and trim applications. This remarkable product is
manufactured under rigorous factory specifications and guidelines, providing consistent quality and excellent dimensional stability. It doesn’t warp, buckle, or fade—traits
associated with vinyl siding products—and holds a Class 1 (A) Fire Rating. Fiber cement siding will not rot, is capable of withstanding damaging effects of salt spray and
ultraviolet rays, and cannot be penetrated by birds or insects. Once installed, the product stands up to bumps and direct impacts, unlike aluminum siding, and doesn’t become
brittle in freezing conditions or melt in the presence of heat sources, like barbeque grills, as does vinyl siding. Fiber cement products can be used in historic preservation areas
where other cladding materials are forbidden. Fiber cement siding holds paint well, with some products warranted to hold paint for up to twenty-five years. Transferable
product warranties can last as long as fifty years depending on the degree of “pre-finish” applied in the factory.
Most people buy fiber cement siding that has been factory primed and sealed or is fully prefinished in the factory. Factory priming protects the product from moisture
penetration on the job site and once the product is installed. Some contractors choose to buy the product raw and then prime and finish paint it themselves, although this is
not recommended by manufacturers and may affect the warranty
While fiber cement siding is a low maintenance product, it does require some care to maintain its appearance. Insect nests and accumulated dirt can easily be removed by
power washing. It’s also a good idea to inspect caulked joints each year between butt ends of boards, windows, and doors. Gaps that open when caulk pulls away can easily
be filled with a high quality acrylic, latex, or urethane caulk meeting ASTM Standard C-920 and are readily available in hardware and paint stores. A well maintained fiber
cement siding product generally requires repainting only every seven to fifteen years.
